Green Winged Macaw

Owning a Green Wing Macaw (Ara chloropterus) can be a rewarding but demanding experience. These birds are large, intelligent, and social, requiring significant time, space, and attention. Here are the key aspects to consider:

Basic Information

  • Size: About 36-40 inches (91-101 cm) in length, with a wingspan of up to 49 inches.
  • Lifespan: Can live 60-80 years with proper care.
  • Personality: Affectionate, intelligent, and social; they require daily interaction.
  • Speech Ability: Can learn words and phrases but are not the best talkers among macaws.

Care Requirements

  • Cage Size: A large cage (at least 3-4 feet wide, 5-6 feet tall) with space to spread wings. A dedicated bird-safe room or outdoor aviary is ideal.
  • Diet: A mix of high-quality pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts; avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine.
  • Exercise: Needs at least 3-4 hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily.
  • Mental Stimulation: Provide toys, foraging activities, and interaction to prevent boredom.

Socialization & Behavior

  • Highly social and bonds deeply with their owner.
  • Can become territorial or aggressive without proper training.
  • Needs consistent training and socialization to prevent destructive behaviors.
  • May be loud, especially in the morning and evening.
